Problem Statement:

Food insecurity is known as a significant public health problem that negatively impacts physical, mental, and social health. A common misconception is the belief that advanced countries have the ability to supply all inhabitants with an abundance of food that can be readily available for everyone, although food insecurity affects both developing and developed nations. Access to adequate food that supports active and healthy life is a consistent challenge for many people from all around the world. The issue of food insecurity is a serious health concern due to its close ties to an individual’s well-being.

Mission Statement:

The construction of Five Acres Farm and Food Hub, located at 945 Parks Avenue, Nanaimo, aims to tackle the rising issue of food insecurity in Nanaimo by supporting long-term food security and sourcing food from local farmers and/or grocers as well as providing programs to build skills, literacy, and community networks. This facility is intended to be a not-for-profit community food hub that aims to connect members of the Nanaimo community with resources, skills, social environment, and knowledge to create change. It will offer a sense of place by providing social opportunities, shifting the patterns of use and behaviors, unifying a community, and bridging demographic gaps. Furthermore, Five Acres Farm and Food Hub strives to support local social justice, the surrounding community, and local agricultural sustainability at the ground level.
